The Position

The legal team at Unison is growing. We are seeking a Corporate Counsel to support the Head of Legal and Compliance in managing the company’s legal, regulatory and compliance matters. The ideal candidate can manage numerous and diverse responsibilities across all aspects of the organization, and can bring depth of experience and focus to drive projects to completion. They will have experience with real estate or financial services, deep contract and negotiation experience, or a combination of experiences applicable to an in house legal department. 

The individual in this job will need to be able to work in a fast-paced, project oriented environment.  We have aggressive goals for the expansion of our product and need someone who will be able to drive to these goals. 

Responsibilities Include:

• Real estate investment support.  Support the investment management team in resolving real estate and consumer finance issues related to Unison’s investments.
• Commercial contracts.  Review, negotiate and draft commercial contracts, vendor agreements, and engagement letters.
• Consumer finance regulatory & compliance.  Partner with our Senior Manager of Consumer Compliance in balancing legal and business objectives to support Unison’s consumer acquisition process.
• Consumer marketing.  Oversee marketing review of advertising and educational materials. 
• Manage relationships with external counsel at national and local levels. Participate as needed in various initiatives such as new product development, improving internal systems, managing external partners, or providing team leadership. Develop high levels of trust and credibility both internally and externally.
• Be a trusted team member.  Unison’s legal team prides itself on being a business partner, not a checkbox or hurdle.  An important part of this role is effective partnering as we build a better company every day. 

Qualifications and Skills:

• Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school and licensed to practice law in California, or eligible for in-house registration
• 4-8 years of relevant law firm and/or in-house legal department experience
• Real estate finance and brokerage laws, consumer lending, financial services, and regulatory experience preferred 
• Superior business acumen
• Strong contract drafting skills
• Litigation experience is a plus
• In house experience is a plus
