Senior Privacy and Compliance Counsel

The role:

The Senior Privacy and Compliance Counsel is a terrific opportunity to work in a fast paced environment in a key role that combines legal advisory and compliance functions. You will be able to operate independently and work collaboratively within the broader Legal Team as well as cross-functionally and with business partners. What you’ll do: 

• Stay abreast of strategically important laws and regulations in the US and the EU, such as HIPAA, CCPA/CPRA and GDPR and related state and federal legislation.
• Manage and further develop Zenefits’ Risk Management, Compliance and Privacy Programs.
• Manage and facilitate privacy and other Zenefits compliance policies, compliance training, procedures, documentation, company guidance, and related customer and employee requests and escalations.
• Help ensure legal adherence and other compliance adherence, while enabling the development and execution of business initiatives.
• Provide legal and compliance guidance related to payroll tax compliance and operational functions.
• Perform other legal responsibilities as requested, including but not limited to, commercial agreement review from time to time.

What you'll bring: 

• JD from an accredited institution.
• Licensed member in good standing of any US state bar.
• 6-9 years of substantive experience in privacy and data protection matters, preferably in the technology sector at a consumer facing SaaS technology company. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of US and international privacy and data protection laws.
• Understanding of Software as a Service (SaaS) infrastructure.
• Curiosity with a need to understand how things work and a willingness to dive into the details of business operations, procedures and technicalities to craft and optimize solutions.
• Solution orientation and a can do attitude.
• The ability to educate others -  you like to break down complicated laws and regulations into practical advice and guidance for your business partners and build positive relationships across departments and levels.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in knowing when and how to raise issues and propose solutions.

In addition to the above requirements, these qualifications are strongly preferred:

• CIPP/US Certification
• SOC2 program management experience
• Experience with AML and Bank Secrecy Act compliance
• Payroll operations experience

This position can be located in Tempe, AZ; San Francisco, CA; or remotely in the US. Most of our teams work Pacific or Mountain time zone hours.

The pay range for this position is approximately $150,000 per year to $200,000 per year salary, based on experience, ability, and geographic location.
