Overview

The Microsoft CoreAI Speech Team is building speech technologies and data foundations that power the next generation of AI experiences. Our team is developing a next-generation agentic data processing platform to enable scalable and automated data workflows for speech and AI model development. The platform supports the end-to-end data lifecycle, including data acquisition and generation, processing, filtering, quality validation, and data preparation.

We are hiring an experienced Software Engineer II and a Senior Software Engineer to join our team! As a Software Engineer within the Microsoft CoreAI Speech Team, you will help design, build, and evolve this platform, leveraging technologies such as Python, Apache Spark, and Microsoft Azure to process large-scale speech, audio, text, and other machine learning data. You will build platform capabilities and automation that make complex data workflows more scalable, reliable, and efficient.

You will work at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, speech, and AI technologies, contributing to the architecture and implementation of systems that support large-scale AI data processing. This role requires solid software engineering skills, solid systems thinking, and the ability to translate data, engineering, and research needs into scalable platform capabilities.

Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. We bring that mission to life through a culture that values growth mindset, diverse perspectives, and continuous learning. Join us and help build the data foundation for the next generation of speech and AI experiences.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and evolve a large-scale agentic data processing platform for speech and AI model development.

  • Develop data processing systems and platform capabilities using Python, Apache Spark/PySpark, and Microsoft Azure.

  • Build capabilities that support data acquisition and generation, processing, filtering, quality validation, and data preparation across large-scale data workflows.

  • Design tools, abstractions, and automation that make complex data processing workflows easier to develop, operate, and scale.

  • Integrate AI and agentic capabilities into data processing workflows to improve automation and developer productivity.

  • Debug and optimize interactions across data processing, distributed compute, AI models, and cloud infrastructure.

  • Contribute to technical design and implementation across the software development lifecycle.

  • Maintain high standards for code quality, testing, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, applied scientists, researchers, and partner teams to translate speech and AI data requirements into production-ready platform capabilities.

You will contribute to a rewarding engineering culture through thoughtful design discussions, code reviews, and collaboration across teams. You'll have the opportunity to help shape the architecture and technical direction of a new platform while growing your technical scope across data, cloud, speech, and AI systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Python, C#, C++, or Java

    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid software engineering skills, including software design, implementation, testing, debugging, and code quality.
  • Experience developing production software using Python, C#, or another modern programming language.

  • Experience with Apache Spark/PySpark and large-scale data processing.

  • Experience with distributed systems, data engineering technologies, or large-scale data processing platforms.

  • Proven programming experience with Python and/or C#/.NET.

  • Experience designing and developing cloud-based services, systems, or data platforms, particularly on Microsoft Azure or comparable cloud platforms.

  • Experience building production-quality data platforms, data pipelines, or workflow orchestration systems.

  • Experience working with speech, audio, text, or machine learning data.

  • Experience with AI/ML systems, large language models, agents, or agentic workflows.
