ABOUT RETOOL

Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software for critical operations like tracking performance metrics, handling support workflows, building admin dashboards, and countless processes you might never have thought of. But most companies don't have the resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old, clunky internal software, or worse, teams still stuck in manual and spreadsheet workflows.

AI has changed who gets to build software. The definition of "developer" now includes analysts, operators, and domain experts creating solutions directly—and the tools they reach for are multiplying by the week. That's both an opportunity and a challenge: as more people build with more AI tools, the risk of shipping ungoverned software into production grows just as fast.

At Retool, we're building the platform that makes all of it safe to ship. Build with any AI tool you want, then deploy into one place that connects to your real business data, enforces enterprise policies automatically, and lets teams create once and reuse everywhere with shared, trusted components. The cost of building software has collapsed. The cost of governing it hasn't—and that's the problem we solve.

Developers and domain experts have already automated over 100 million hours of work on our platform, freeing them to focus on creative problem-solving and strategic work that drives real business value. The people closest to the problem can now build the software to solve it, safely, and within enterprise guardrails.

Let's build the future together.
WHY WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

Retool is growing fast, and our legal function needs to keep pace. We're looking for a commercial lawyer who moves quickly, communicates clearly, and is genuinely energized by helping a business close deals and scale its operations without unnecessary legal drag. This is a hands-on, high-impact role reporting to the Head of Legal. You'll play a key role in supporting our commercial contracting work, partnering closely with our sales team, leading our vendor contract program, and helping build  the legal ops infrastructure (playbooks, templates, processes). If you enjoy solving problems and finding practical, scalable solutions and want to work somewhere that treats legal as a business enabler rather than a checkpoint, this role is for you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Serve as a key legal contact for our sales team on commercial transactions by reviewing, revising, and negotiating MSAs, DPAs, order forms, and NDAs
  • Lead vendor contract reviews, partnering with internal stakeholders who own the vendor relationship
  • Help build and maintain our commercial legal infrastructure, including contract intake workflows, contract templates, playbooks, and process documentation, and identify opportunities to leverage AI to improve efficiency and scale
  • Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, Trust, and other internal teams to provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance on day-to-day operational matters
  • Stay current on legal developments affecting AI technologies and evolving laws and regulations relevant to our business
  • Support our Head of Legal on special projects and matters as needed

THE SKILLSET YOU'LL BRING

  • J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 3-5 years of in-house or law firm experience, with meaningful exposure to commercial contracts in a B2B SaaS/AI environment across both customer and vendor relationships
  • Familiarity with privacy law frameworks, including GDPR and CCPA, as they arise in commercial transactions
  • Comfort with high-volume, quick-turn commercial work and the ability to prioritize and execute independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort translating legal concepts for non-lawyer audiences
  • Genuine curiosity about AI tools and legal tech, with a willingness to leverage them to work more efficiently
  • Experience with contract management systems such as Ironclad or similar a plus
