ABOUT RETOOL
Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software for critical operations like tracking performance metrics, handling customer support workflows, building admin dashboards, and countless other processes you might not have even thought of. But most companies don't have adequate resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old and clunky internal software or, even worse, users still stuck in manual and spreadsheet flows.

At Retool, we’re building the first enterprise AppGen platform: software that transforms natural language into production-ready code, integrates directly with business data, and meets the highest standards of security and governance. AI is redefining what it means to build software—and who gets to build it. The definition of “developer” now includes analysts, operators, and domain experts creating solutions directly. As the pool of builders widens, so does the complexity of what they need to build. The opportunity is enormous, but so is the challenge of enabling this larger community to build production-grade software safely. That means AI that understands real business data, enforces enterprise policies automatically, and empowers teams to create once and reuse everywhere with shared, trusted components.

Over 100 million hours of work has been automated by developers and domain experts using our platform, freeing them to focus on creative problem-solving and strategic initiatives that drive real business value. The people closest to knowing what needs to be built can now safely create custom solutions within enterprise guardrails. And that's a mission worth striving for.

Let's build the future together!
WHY WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
The same way that Retool is transforming how our customers interact with software entirely, our internal Developer Experience (DevX) team is evolving how engineering works within Retool.
We’re hiring AI DevX Engineers to help us push the boundaries of what Retool engineers can do with LLMs. If you’re passionate about building bespoke AI experiences for engineering teams—fast, reliable, and powerful—we want to talk.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
As an AI DevX Engineer, you’ll work across product and infrastructure layers to ship custom, internal-facing AI software that's both powerful and reliable. This means building tools that are intelligent, fast, and deeply embedded into the entire lifecycle of software development. These tools need the context and access to give superpowers to engineers working on any task, from writing code to responding to incidents.
Since human attention is now the critical bottleneck for our engineering work, you'll also be building AI tools that are capable and trustworthy enough to autonomously drive toil management work like fixing brittle tests, cleaning up old code, and updating stale documentation. In short, you'll free our engineers — yourself included — to focus on real innovation.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
  • Build internal developer-facing AI tools and agents that are intelligent, fast, and deeply embedded into the software development lifecycle
  • Create autonomous, resilient agents and evaluation frameworks to power an AI-driven software factory
  • Drive context engineering that keeps AI-legible code, skills, and documentation reliable as the codebase moves fast beneath it
  • Improve the performance, observability, and safety of the model architecture behind our internal AI tools
  • Define and champion the workflows that maximize AI efficiency and accuracy across the organization
  • Design processes for AI to evaluate and improve the state of code quality, test coverage, documentation freshness, and other toil
  • Shape a model of AI-driven work where agents begin to own initiatives, proactively asking engineers for direction when greater judgment is required

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
You'll join a team of engineers working across the broad surface of developer experience and release engineering. You'll also partner with leaders and AI power users across the organization, incorporating their feedback into the development process and training them on workflows that will make them effective.
This is a high impact role where you'll be a part of defining what an AI-native development environment looks like, and building the infrastructure, processes, training, and guardrails that make it a reality. You'll be identifying and solving hard problems in a low-hierarchy organization where ambition is met with support, not gatekeeping.

THE SKILLSET YOU’LL BRING
  • A track record of building and shipping real tools or pipelines—not just models or papers
  • An eye for developer experience: you care how tools work and how they feel to use
  • Experience integrating LLMs into development tools in impactful ways
  • Experience building developer tooling, internal platforms, or infrastructure that improves engineering productivity
  • Excitement to have AI as a core collaborator in the development lifecycle
  • A pragmatic mindset about what’s scalable and maintainable
  • Strong opinions, weakly held—you move quickly but bring others along
